The annual Freezin’ for a Reason Lake George Polar Plunge is usually a rollicking affair with blasting music and hundreds of costumed plungers packing Shepard Park to support New York Special Olympics. This year’s plunge, held Saturday, Nov. 14, was tempered by public health concerns. There were fewer plungers and only a handful of spectators, but the enthusiasm was as strong as ever.
To reduce crowd size, each wave of plungers was limited to a group of individual top fundraisers and single teams. Special Olympic supporters had the option of participating in a virtual plunge at home with a cold shower, ice bucket or garden hose.
With the air temperature barely reaching 40 degrees, and water temperature not much warmer at 49 degrees, the group of individual plungers ran into Lake George at 10 a.m. followed by team groups.
As of noon, plungers had raised $48,862 to support Special Olympic athletes.
