The Village of Lake George will unveil a new feature Sunday, Oct. 23 at the intersection of Canada Street and Beach Road. A two-sided, antique-style bronze street clock, manufactured by the Verdin Company, will take a prominent spot in the triangle in front of the Visitor Center. The clock is to honor the late Walter Marinelli, who passed away Oct. 23, 1999. The dedication ceremony to recognize Marinelli’s years of community service will begin at 1 p.m.
According to a Village of Lake George press release, Marinelli was an original member of the committee that raised funds for the Village Recreation Center, a 320-acre facility that now boasts three baseball diamonds, a soccer field, football field and an extensive system of cross-country ski trails. The Village Recreations Center is located on Transfer Road off State Route 9N.
Marinelli, Neil McPhillips, Michael Lanfear and Mayor Blais launched several fundraisers to pay for construction of the Recreation Center, including an annual golf tournament. Marinelli was also a member of the Village Planning Board and Youth Commission. He and his wife Dolores ran the Admiral Motel in Lake George for several years.
Funds to purchase the new street clock were raised by the annual Walter Marinelli Golf Tournament, with the Village board providing matching funds. The Verdin Company has been in the clock making business since 1842 and is known for its high-quality, beautifully designed street and tower clocks. The public is invited to join the Marinelli family and Village officials for the unveiling and dedication ceremony.
