Professor Siobhan Hart, Chair of the Skidmore College Anthropology Department, led an archaeological exploration in Battlefield Park last June. She will be returning to Lake George on Feb. 22 to discuss the conclusions she and her team drew from the three-week survey and her plans for site studies this year.
The event, which is sponsored by the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance, will be held at the Holiday Inn Resort, 2223 Canada Street, Lake George. The program begins at 11 a.m.
The June 2024 survey, conducted by Hart, Assistant Professor Katie Baustian and Skidmore students Lily Whelden and Cerys Forster, was the first archaeological study done in the park since Dr. David Starbuck’s exploration in 2016. Hart’s work in the park this past summer focused on two questions — Can we find the foundation of the Revolutionary War-era smallpox hospital, and can we find evidence confirming the Battle of Lake George battle lines?
The team used Ground Penetrating Radar to identify possible sites that warranted digging. Over the course of three weeks, they uncovered what they believed to be the floor of an Army Barracks, and they found bits of glass, ceramics and animal bones, which required further analysis in their lab.
Hart’s presentation is free and open to the public. Those wishing to attend should reserve a seat by contacting the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance at info@lakegeorgebattlefield.org.
The Alliance will post a video recording of the program on their YouTube channel. Additionally, Dr. Hart will be a guest of “Lake George Battlefield Moments,” the Alliance’s weekly radio program, on February 22 and 23. “Battlefield Moments” airs each Saturday on Lake George Radio, 93.5 FM, at 9:40 a.m.
Other scheduled Alliance events include a presentation by historian George A. Bray III titled “Lord Howe: The Soul of General Abercromby’s Army,” which will be held at the Holiday Inn on April 12 at 11 a.m., and a Memorial Day ceremony on May 26, 10:30 a.m., at the Unknown Soldiers Burial Site in Battlefield Park. These are open to the public.
The Alliance also hosts Members-Only events such as on-water tours of Lake George historical sites and guided tours of Lake George battle sites. To apply for membership, visit the Alliance join/support webpage.
