The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (NY DEC) BOW in the Snow workshops are moving out of the woods and on to the internet this February. BOW is an acronym for Becoming an Outdoors-Woman. Because of the pandemic, DEC is offering webinar versions of the winter sessions, which normally are held in-person. Earlier this year, the national health emergency forced DEC to cancel the BOW 2020 summer and fall sessions.
Five winter 2021 workshops are scheduled:
Thursday, Feb. 4 – Winter Recreation
Thursday, Feb. 11 – Follow your direction…And your compass
Wednesday, Feb. 17 – It’s not what you know, but the KNOT that you know!
Thursday, Feb. 18 – Winter Wellness
Thursday, Feb. 25 – Ice Fishing
Each session begins at 6 p.m. The sessions are free. To register, visit the Becoming a Woods-Woman in NY registration link. For more information, contact Katrina Talbot, NY Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Coordinator, at 518-402-8963 or email Katrina.talbot@dec.ny.gov.
The Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program was founded in 1991 by Dr. Christine Thomas at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and has been offered in New York State since 1994. The program is geared towards the beginner and is aimed to teach women outdoor skills that traditionally have been considered the province of men.
