There’s a new Historical Marker in Lake George’s Battlefield Park. The sign commemorates the capture and burning of Fort George by Major Carleton’s forces on Oct. 11, 1780. The marker, set near the park’s entrance on Fort George Road, was unveiled on Sunday, October 8 with a ceremony that included speeches by State Senator Dan Stec, historian Pat Niles, Lake George Town Historian Margy Mannix and NY DEC Historic Preservation Officer Charles Vandrei. The marker is funded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.
The unveiling was hosted by the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance and the Washington County Historical Society. Following the ceremony, Pat Niles led a tour of sites in Battlefield Park that played a part in Carlton’s raids. Niles has been leading the effort to install markers about the raids throughout the region.
The Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance has also announced two programs coming this winter. On Saturday, Dec. 9, Author Jack Kelly will discuss his new book, “God Save Benedict Arnold”.
