Holiday Train is back on track after a 2-year pause

The Canadian Pacific (CP) 2022 Holiday Train, decked out with thousands of colorful LED lights, will be pulling into the Saratoga Springs Amtrak Station at 7:20 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 27. Canadian country music stars Lindsay Ell and JoJo Mason are scheduled to perform on the open boxcar stage 7:30-8 p.m.

The Holiday Train program sends two trains, one across Canada and one through the U.S., to raise awareness of food insecurity. The event went virtual for the 2020 and 2021 seasons due to the pandemic but is returning in 2022 to collect food and money for community food banks along the CP network.

“I’m grateful to the CP team members who adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic to deliver two exceptional virtual Holiday Train shows and to all those who continued to donate while we kept community members safe,” says Keith Creel, CP’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “The Holiday Train is all about families and communities coming together to celebrate the season and help those in need. We are excited to be back out on the rails and in our communities, taking these two beautiful trains across our network and sharing the joy that comes with gathering in the spirit of giving.”

The Holiday Train shows are free. CP asks attendees to bring non-perishable food items or cash donations to help stock local food pantries. In a press release, CP notes that cash donations can go further than food donations as food banks can purchase food at a discount. Since 1999, the Holiday Train has raised more than $21 million and collected five million pounds of food for North American food banks.

“This year, more than ever, the support, awareness and goodwill that the CP Holiday Train brings will make an impact beyond imagination to the food support programs of East Side Neighborhood Services,” said Mary Anstett, Vice President of Community Engagement for East Side Neighborhood Services in Minneapolis. “With the support that Holiday Train brings in, we can rest assured that so many will have warm nutritious food on their tables in the coldest months.”
