The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is kicking off 2020 by hosting New Year’s Day hikes across the region. The First Day Hikes, designed to connect New Yorkers with nature, include a guided hike up Prospect Mountain in Lake George.
“First Day Hikes are a great way to start the New Year,” says Bob Stegemann, DEC Region 5 Director in a press release. “DEC is excited to work with partners, Paul Smith’s College, and SUNY College of Environment Science and Forestry (ESF), to provide exceptional guided adventures for this year’s First Day Hikes.”
The Prospect Mountain hike will begin at 10 a.m. on January 1, 2020. Participants will meet at the trailhead on Smith Street in Lake George Village. The 1.5-mile trail climbs 1,630 feet to the summit, which offers a panoramic view of Lake George, the Adirondacks and Vermont’s Green Mountains.
Hikers should dress in warm layers and wear appropriate footwear. Snowshoes and/or crampons are necessary. The trail tends to be icy. Hikers should also carry water and snacks. Dogs are allowed, however, the hike begins by crossing a pedestrian walkway over the Northway. The metal grate walkway may be unpleasant for a dog’s paws.
Participants will receive a pair of Adventure NY gloves and a First Day Hike sticker. For information and registration contact Ben Thomas at benjamin.thomas@dec.ny.gov or call (518) 623-1268. There is no charge for this event.
In the event that weather creates hazardous conditions, the hike will be canceled. Registered hikers will be notified of cancellations by Dec. 31.
