Friday concert series kicks off season with Max Creek

Meandering music and a gentle June night brought out a mellow crowd of nearly 150 to Shepard Park Friday evening to dance under the maples and perhaps indulge in a bit of nostalgia for the days of peace and love.

Popular New England jam band Max Creek performed in this first concert of the Fridays at the Lake 2012 concert series. This is the third season for the outdoor summer concerts produced by Improv Records and supported by the Town and Village of Lake George, local businesses and individuals.

Earlier this year the band played in Towers Hall at the Fort William Henry Resort for their 41st anniversary “Creekend”. While the crowd in Shepard Park Friday evening leaned towards the approaching retirement age group, many in the audience could not have been born when the band formed in 1971.

The band has a large following with its Grateful Dead sound and is a perennial favorite of concert-goers in Southern New England. Many in the park Friday dressed in tie-dyed shirts, the standard wear for devotees of the jam band culture.

A whole different sound is scheduled for next Friday, June 22, with keyboardist Jeff Bujak taking the stage with his unique style of electronic dance music.

The concerts are free; attendees need only a handful of quarters to feed the parking meter. Glow necklaces are available at three for $5 so concert- goers may keep their children lit up as the sun goes down. The concert series runs every week through September 7.
