Lake George Examiners learn a new skill at Adirondack Winery’s Uncork & Craft

Wines, sweet and dry, locally produced goat cheese, Adirondack cheddar and skeins of soft, chunky yarn — that combination packed the Adirondack Winery Tasting Room on Canada Street last night. The Lake George Examiner crew, always on the lookout for something new to do, was there for the first installment of Adirondack Winery’s Uncork & Craft series, which combines wine tasting with a craft lesson.

Last night’s project was an arm knitted infinity scarf, the fashionable accessory that is a wardrobe must for those blustery winter days in Lake George. Participants selected their color choice of yarn, loaded up plates of cheese, crackers and roasted nuts, made a choice of wine flights and began looping fat yarn around their arms.

Fashion designer Rhianna Cerro, founder of Sketch Design Lounge in Glens Falls, led the class, and several assistants helped crafters with the steps involved. The Winery Tasting Room staff handled wine pouring and intermittently interrupted the arm knitting instructions to describe the next round of wine tasting.

Tickets for last night’s Uncork & Craft sold out a week earlier, and although men were not prohibited, all the participants were women. Amanda and Emileigh, who live south of Albany, made a one and one-half hour drive up the Northway to attend. “I saw it in my Facebook news feed,” says Amanda and convinced Emileigh to join her. The two women regularly drive up to Lake George for shopping, and Amanda follows the Adirondack Winery’s Facebook newsfeed. Three years ago, she had her bachelorette party at the Tasting Room.

The evening wrapped up with most crafters binding off their scarves, weaving the ends together to create an infinite loop and taking advantage of the 10-percent discount on bottles of wine offered to all ticket-holders. This morning at the Lake George Examiner offices, two are wearing completed scarves and one (the perfectionist) is completing hers. The Adirondack Winery has two more sessions scheduled in the Uncork & Craft series: Friday, Dec. 2 is Festive Felt Flowers and Saturday, Dec. 10 is Wine Tote Painting.
