Lake George to ‘Lite Up’ with 30K-plus lights

Lake George Village employees have been busy testing bulbs and stringing lights throughout Shepard and Blais Parks in preparation for the “Lite Up The Village” celebration to take place Saturday, Nov. 25. This will be the 20th year Village residents and visitors have gathered in Shepard Park to enjoy live music, fireworks and to witness the transformation of the Village as the flip of a switch illuminates the community with thousands of LED lights, vanquishing winter’s darkness for the holiday and Winter Carnival seasons. Last year, Lake George Lite Up The Village drew a crowd exceeding 1,000.

Lite Up The Village begins at 4 p.m. with bounce houses, pony rides and a petting zoo in Shepard Park. Fire pits will be spread throughout to keep attendees warm. Nationally renowned magician and ventriloquist Steve Charney and local favorites The Zucchini Brothers take the stage in Shepard Park at 4:30 p.m. At 6:15, the switch will be thrown to light up the village. The illumination will be followed by fireworks over the lake and the Fire Truck Holiday Light Parade up Canada Street.

The lighted fire truck parade debuted last year with several local fire departments decorating their engines with lights and competing for cash prizes and trophies. Bay Ridge Fire Company took home the 2016 prize for best decorated. More than 11 fire departments are participating this year. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be riding in the parade, making a stop at Shepard Park before continuing to the Lake George Firehouse on Ottawa Street.

At the firehouse, children may meet with Santa and everyone can enjoy refreshments and sing along with the Lake George Community Band who will be performing a free holiday concert. The Lake George Chamber of Commerce is promoting Small Business Day in conjunction with the Lite Up The Village celebration. Local shop owners are encouraged to offer specials for holiday shoppers.
