Lake George Memorial Day Weekend features parade, ceremony and a look to the past

The Village of Lake George has designated Memorial Day Weekend 2018, May 25 – 28, History Weekend. Scheduled events include a traditional Memorial Day parade and ceremonies to honor members of the U.S. military who died while serving their country. Other events and activities will focus on Lake George history.

Memorial Day Parade
Saturday, May 26
The parade steps off at noon from Beach Road and travels up Canada Street ending at Shepard Park. A Memorial Day Ceremony will be held in the park immediately following the parade.

Ceremony and rededication of Four Unknown Soldiers Grave
The Lake George Battlefield Park (Fort George) Alliance, with American Legion Post 374, Fort William Henry and the Lake George Fire Department will honor soldiers who died in the 1755 Battle of Lake George on Monday, May 28 with a 10:30 a.m. Ceremony. The burial site in Battlefield Park along Fort George Road is the oldest recognized grave for unknown American soldiers in the United States. The Alliance recently completed upgrades to the grounds and will rededicate the gravesite at the morning ceremony. Following the ceremony, the Alliance will lead a tour of the park. Show a copy of the event flyer at the front gate for free admission and parking.

Lake George Historical Association Museum opens
The Historical Association’s museum is located in the Old Warren County Courthouse on Canada Street. The museum will be open 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Visitors may view exhibits including the new “Native American Presence: Lake George” and descend into the basement to examine the 19th Century jail cells that once housed Warren County prisoners. Admission to the museum is free. Donations are encouraged.

Caldwell-Lake George Library collection on display
The library, located at 336 Canada Street, will be open Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Visitors will have the opportunity to view the library’s Antique Stereoscope slide collection of Lake George images. The library is also selling its Cat’s Meow collection of historic Lake George buildings.

Sacred Heart Church historic presentation
Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 50 Mohican Street, will open its 1874 Chapel Saturday, 12 – 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Peggy Germano will give a presentation on the historic stained glass window Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. Historic photos of the church will be displayed and the book “History of Sacred Heart” will be available for purchase.

The Caldwell Presbyterian Church, 75 Montcalm Street will commemorate its history at its Sunday 10 a.m. service. The church was founded in 1810 by James Caldwell, who established the Village of Caldwell that same year. The Montcalm Street building was erected in 1855, with additions made in the 1950s and 1970s. A new steeple was built last summer.

The Lake George Steamboat Company is launching its 201st year in business and is offering narrated cruises all weekend long. From the decks of the Minne-Ha-Ha, The Mohican and the Lac du Saint Sacrement, cruisers can learn all about Lake George and view the elegant mansions built along its shore.
