Prospect Mountain Hike
Meetup on Jan. 1, 2024, at 10 a.m. at the trailhead on Smith Street in the Village of Lake George (GPS coordinates: 43.4254°N, 73.7197°W)
Description: This 3-mile round-trip hike climbs 1,630 feet from the trailhead to the 2,030-foot summit of the mountain. There, under the right conditions, you will be able to enjoy a panoramic and 100-mile view which includes Lake George, Vermont’s Green Mountains, New Hampshire’s White Mountains, New York’s Adirondack High Peaks and, on a very clear day, the Laurentian Mountains of Canada. This is a moderate to difficult hike depending on weather conditions.
Special Instructions: You must have appropriate clothing and footwear. Snowshoes or crampons are required. Weather conditions may make this trail extremely icy and require additional traction. Bring water, snacks, or anything else you may need for a hike. There is no age limit, although this hike is not recommended for young children. Pets are allowed on leash, however there is a considerably long pedestrian walkway over I-87 at the beginning of this hike. The metal grate walkway may be unpleasant for dog’s paws.
Registration Required: Contact Ben Thomas at benjamin.thomas@dec.ny.gov or (518) 623-1268 by December 28th.
Cat Mountain Hike
Meetup on Jan 1, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. Edge Comb Pond Trailhead, Bolton*
Description: The hike will be up Cat Mountain via the Red Trail and taking the Blue Trail on the way down. The total round-trip distance of this moderate hike is 4.1 miles, with approximately 1,000 feet of vertical gain. It should take around 2.5 hours to complete. The summit of Cat Mountain has great views of Lake George, with Buck Mountain almost directly to the East.
This hike will be led by Steve Mackey from the Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club.
Special Instructions: There is no minimum age for this hike, but it is probably not appropriate for a child’s first hike. You may need microspikes or snowshoes. If you own them, bring them, and it will be decided at the trailhead whether or not they are needed. The hike leader, Steve Mackey, has a few extra pairs of each but needs to know ahead of time if they are needed. Bring some food and drink; something hot in a thermos is always good. It’s a good idea to have an extra down jacket/layers in your pack, for extra warmth on the summit. You should carry a headlamp or flashlight, as it is always wise to bring for unforeseen situations. Well-behaved pets are allowed on leash.
Registration Required: Contact Steve Mackey at smackey33@verizon.net or (518) 338-8173. There is a limit of 15 hikers for this event. It is okay to register up until the night before, but the hike may be filled. A waiting list will be kept, if necessary.
* Get off the Northway at exit 24 and head towards Bolton Landing. At 2.0 miles, turn right onto Valley Woods Road. At 0.6 miles, turn right onto Edgecomb Pond Road. Follow this road for 1.5 miles before turning right onto Edgecomb Pond Road (again). In 600 feet, the trailhead will be on your right. If you have trouble finding it on your phone or map, email smackey33@verizon.net
for further directions.
