Sept. 4, 2021 – The sun had yet to rise over French Mountain when the first wave of swimmers dove into Lake George for the start of Alpha Win’s first race of the weekend, the Alpha 70.3, a triathlon of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike route and a half-marathon run. The racing continues Sunday, Sept. 5 with the Alpha Sprint and the Alpha Olympic.
According to Chris Pace of Alpha Win, more than 600 athletes are competing at Lake George this year, which he notes is a great turnout considering the challenges and travel restrictions competitors face coming out of the pandemic.
Alpha Win, formally HITS Endurance, is headed by Tommy Struzzieri. The organization offers races to include athletes with different levels of training and endurance. “A distance for everyone” is the company’s tagline.
The Lake George Battlefield Park grounds along Beach Road serve as a basecamp.
The swimmers launched from the stretch of beach, the “Dog Beach,” directly across the street from Battlefield Park.
Following the swimming segment, the Alpha 70.3 athletes stripped off their wet suits and mounted their bikes. The 56-mile ride took them north to Warrensburg. From there they followed the Schroon River, circled Brant Lake, and then returned to Lake George to rack their bikes and begin a 13.1-mile run along the Warren County Bikeway.
