Martin’s Lumber in Thurman is holding its Annual Woods Walk and Artisan Market on Saturday, June 3, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors can join guided walks through the woods to learn about native plants and mushrooms. The plant walk will focus on finding and identifying traditional “weeds” while discussing the nutritional and medicinal values of each. Back at the barn samples of these prepared herbs/weeds will be offered. This is a free event.
Owner Gary Martin will be on hand to direct guests to the self-guided tree identification walk and will be available to discuss lumber, sustainable forestry, selective cutting and how environmental awareness saves forests. Martin’s Lumber is also a stop on the Warren County Planning Department Letterboxing Trail. Letter boxers can follow the clues to find Box #15 and stamp their passports.
Woodworkers, jewelers, soap-makers and other artisans will be demonstrating their crafts and offering goods for purchase at the barn. Guests can participate in hands-on activities including mushroom inoculation and candle making.
In the artisan market, shoppers will find handmade soaps, mushroom products, recycled feed bags, local authors and their works, pyrography, greeting cards, lotions, jewelry, candles, and woodwork along with flowers and treats made from the herbs found on the plant walk.
Representatives from the Buy Nothing Project and Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners will be in the barn offering information and advice.
