There is one time each year you can polka in the middle of State Route 9 without risking a traffic accident. You can even do it in lederhosen while drinking beer and shouting “Hoi, Hoi, Hoi.” It’s in October and it is at the Lake George Oktoberfest, three days of German music and dancing, Bavarian food, carnival rides, merchandise vendors, arts and crafts, bounce houses, pony rides, contests, beer and wine.
The 8th Annual Lake George Oktoberfest opens Friday of Columbus Day Weekend, Oct. 5, 5 – 10 p.m. and continues Saturday, Oct. 6, 12 – 10 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 7, 12 – 5 p.m. Admission is free. Children and well-behaved dogs are welcome.
The beer garden tent will be set up in the middle of Canada Street between Montcalm and Amherst (in front of Shepard Park) and house a stage, dance floor, picnic tables, beer wagon and steaming pans of German food. Traffic through Lake George Village will be diverted to the back streets.
Two dozen vendors will set up along the Village sidewalks offering jewelry, clothing, chainsaw carvings, maple products, cider donuts and more. Green Mountain Amusements and Bounce Around are bringing carnival rides, inflatables and a rock-climbing wall. The public is invited to enter the keg-tossing and stein hoisting contests, which will be held in Shepard Park.
In addition to the beer garden menu of Bavarian food, festival-goers will find mac and cheese, Belgian waffles, sandwiches, soup, pulled pork and chili at participating food wagons.
