He was a British officer during the French and Indian War, a Continental Army General during the American Revolution, a confidant of George Washington, and he served in several political positions — Mayor of Albany, member of the Continental Congress, New York State’s Surveyor General, and US Senator, but he may be best known as Alexander Hamilton’s father-in-law.
Philip Schuyler was the topic of a talk presented by historian Michael P. Barrett. The presentation was held Saturday, April 22, at the Fort William Henry Conference Center. Barrett is a Trustee of Albany Rural Cemetery which, along with the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance and The French and Indian War Society, hosted the event.
Approximately 110 people attended the program, which was titled “Philip Schuyler: His Life, Death and After-life.” Barrett’s presentation included a discussion of Schuyler’s role as a successful businessman and slaveholder.
The Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance will add a video of the presentation to the Alliance website within the next few days. The Alliance is also preparing for the upcoming summer season with plans to open the Battlefield Park Visitors Center for its second season on Friday, May 26 and resume weekly 1-hour guided tours of the park on Saturday, May 27.
Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, The Alliance will hold its annual Remembrance Ceremony at the burial site in Battlefield Park of the four unknown soldiers killed during the Battle of Lake George.
