Photos: American Legion 2022 POW/MIA Remembrance on Prospect Mountain

The American Legion held its annual POW/MIA Remembrance ceremony Sunday, June 5 on Prospect Mountain in Lake George. The Patriot Guard Riders of New York rode up the mountain and stood a flag line throughout the ceremony. The Johnsburg Central School Band, accompanied by the JCS flags, performed a medley of armed service songs from each military branch. The JCS Pop Singers sang the National Anthem.

“We’re here to celebrate POWs/MIAs and they all deserve our attention,” says Donald Keenan, Warren County American Legion Commander. “…to date, there are 83,114 Americans still missing and unaccounted for. We raise and lower the flag in honor of them in our continued hope that more will be found and returned home…Tomorrow, June 6, is also the anniversary of D-Day in 1944. That was at Normandy, France, where over 4,000 soldiers died, and we are still recovering MIAs and POWs to this day.”

The American Legion has been holding POW/MIA remembrance services on Prospect Mountain each June since 1974, although the mountain’s link to veterans dates back to 1969 when the six-mile road winding up the mountain was dedicated as Veterans Memorial Parkway. This year’s ceremony was organized by Paul Sears, Commander, North Creek American Legion Post 629.
