The drive up Prospect Mountain will be free Saturday, Nov. 3, Sunday Nov. 4 and Veterans Day, Sunday Nov. 11. The Department of Environmental Conservation is waiving the usual $10 per-car toll to honor Veterans. The 5.5-mile Veterans Memorial Highway winds up the mountain with scenic overlook stops offering panoramic views of Lake George and the surrounding mountains.
The highway ends at a parking lot and day-use area just below the mountain’s summit. A short hike brings visitors to the top of the mountain and a shuttle bus with wheelchair lifts runs from the parking lot to the peak.
The summit was once the site of the Prospect Mountain House. From 1895 to 1903, an inclined railway brought people up the mountain. Remains of the railway are on the mountaintop marked with signage for self-guided tours of the historical site.
