Warrensburg businesses are offering discounts, free samples and raffle tickets this year for Warrensburg’s fourth annual Shop Local Saturday event to be held Nov. 26 throughout the town. Shoppers may stop in at any participating business to take advantage of exclusive Shop Local Saturday discounts, pick up a free Shop Small tote bag, coupon book, and raffle tickets. This is the fourth year for the event that encourages consumers to support small, local businesses as they start their holiday shopping.
This year, says Suzanne Tyler of the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber is joining the American Express Shop Small campaign, which was launched in 2010 to support neighborhood business as an “antidote to crass commercialism.” The Campaign designates the Saturday following Thanksgiving and Black Friday as Small Business Saturday. Last year, according to American Express, 95 million people across the nation shopped local on Small Business Saturday.
In addition to a tote bag and coupon book offering discounts at local businesses, Warrensburg shoppers may collect a raffle ticket from each participating shop. No purchase is necessary to get a ticket. Shoppers have until 5 p.m. to bring their tickets to the Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce office at 3839 Main Street (Across from Tops supermarket) to be entered into drawings for more than two dozen gift cards. Winners must be age 21 years or older.
“We have some really nice prizes this year,” says Tyler, “such as golf for four with cart at Cronin’s.” This year’s prizes are in gift certificate form rather than baskets. With 30 to give away, Tyler notes, everyone has a good chance at winning.
In conjunction with Shop Local Saturday, Church of the Holy Cross on Main Street (across from Warrensburg Health Center) will be offering shoppers a respite with a luncheon of homemade soups, bread, desserts and warm beverages.
Free children’s activities in the church hall include making candy with the Christmas Elf and fishing for toys in the North Pole pond. The holiday bazaar includes a homemade candy walk, crafts, fresh wreaths and kissing balls. The church’s popular Grandmother’s Attic, a white elephant-type sale that offers an interesting assortment of housewares, costume jewelry and Christmas decorations, will be open as well.
