The 2023 Lake George Winter Carnival opened the first weekend of February with brutally cold temperatures and icy winds. Four weekends later, on closing day, milder weather brought sunshine, and the melting snow hinted at spring. The final day of Winter Carnival 2023 was held Sunday, Feb. 26 and drew a smaller crowd than was found on Presidents Day Weekend. Sunday was the end of Winter Recess, and no doubt visitors were heading home to prepare for the return to school.
The temperatures throughout the month fell to a low of -20 degrees and reached a high of nearly 50 degrees preventing the lake from building enough ice to support vehicles. While ice anglers dared walk on the lake’s surface, the fickle weather forced the cancellation of on-ice car and motorcycle races. The Carnival’s outhouse races were moved to Battlefield Park. All other activities were full steam ahead.
The Sunday schedule included Make Your Own Sundaes and Decorate Your Own Cupcakes, karaoke, pony and carriage rides, keg toss and skillet toss competitions, the Lake George Dogs Got Talent Show and arts and crafts activities for children.
The Lake George Winter Carnival is held each weekend in February. 2023 marked the 61st anniversary of the popular event.
